Life in the Digital Age....

Is technology fulfilling our needs as human beings or is it just creating a need in and of itself? For example...the invention of the vacuum cleaner. Before it, did we just live in anticipation for a device to finally serve us in a way to where we could finally live cleanly, or is it just creating a need only necessary, after the fact?

  1. I do think that technology is creating needs that once were not necessary to our lives. Take the cell phone for instance, there are many people who once were indifferent to the device and now feel lost without their cell phone. I think that this is a perfect example of how a desire becomes a necessity. This desire is sparked by the want to fit in and conform with the rest of society. If someone is surrounded by people who carry the same technological device, eventually this person will want to fit in and will buy the device to conform to their surroundings. So I don't think that people are living in anticipation to technological advances that will make their lives 'better'. But I don't think that all technology falls into this category. If you look at some of the current 3-d modeling systems, architects and designers are now able to create architecture that was once very difficult to design, if not impossible. So i think that technology has its pros and cons, but if we use it to reinforce our existing skills we will be able to combine our physical world and the virtual world, and the two entities can live together in symbiosis.
